What is the Fill PDF Form tool?
Somebody sent you a PDF with boxes on it and expects it back today. The old routine was print, biro, scan, hope the scanner is set up. This tool skips all of that: it reads the interactive fields already built into the document and gives you a proper input for each one, so you can fill PDF form online free and send back a clean digital file.
The left panel is the form. Each field appears with its real name, a badge for its type, and badges for required or read-only where that applies, plus the page it sits on. The right panel is the actual document, rendered page by page, with your answers drawn inside each field's own rectangle. Focus a field on the left and the preview jumps to that page and outlines the box in red, which is how you tell apart two fields that are both called βDateβ.
Nothing is uploaded. The PDF is parsed with pdf-lib and drawn with pdf.js inside your browser, which matters more here than for most tools β the forms people fill in are tenancy applications, benefit claims, medical intake sheets and job paperwork, all of it stuffed with personal data you should not be handing to a random web service.
How to complete PDF forms in your browser
- Drop your fillable PDF onto the drop area, or click it to browse. The field list and the page preview build themselves straight away.
- Work down the list and enter your answers β a text box for text fields, a tick box for checkboxes, a menu for radio groups, dropdowns and option lists.
- Use Find a field to search by name or type, and the Show chips to narrow the list to Empty, Required or Read-only fields.
- Watch the preview: blue outlines are ordinary fields, red means required and still empty, grey dashes mean read-only, and the thick red border is the field you are editing.
- Open Advanced options if you want to tick Flatten form, load answers from a CSV or JSON file, or export what you have typed as JSON to reuse next time.
- Press Save filled PDF to download the completed document.
Key features
- All the common field types β single-line and multi-line text, checkboxes, radio groups, dropdowns and option lists are all editable. Signature and button fields are listed for reference and marked as not fillable.
- Values drawn where they really go β the preview uses each widget's own rectangle from the PDF, so rotated pages and odd crop boxes still line up.
- Required-field warnings β anything marked required in the document turns red while it is empty, so you do not send the form back half done.
- Search and filters β long government forms with eighty fields become manageable when you can jump to the empty ones only.
- Live counters β the summary strip shows how many fields exist, how many of each type, how many are required and how many you have filled.
- Flatten a filled form β an option that draws the answers permanently into the page so nobody can edit them afterwards and every reader displays them identically.
- CSV and JSON import/export β reuse the same answers across a stack of identical forms instead of retyping your address twenty times.
- Field limits respected β where a text field declares a maximum length, the input enforces it, so nothing is silently truncated on save.
Benefits of using this PDF form filler
- Your personal details stay yours. Names, dates of birth, bank details and medical answers are typed into a page running on your own machine, not posted to a server.
- Legible every time. Typed answers avoid the classic rejection β handwriting the clerk could not read, or a scan too dark to process.
- No Acrobat licence needed. The browser you already have is enough, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS.
- Nothing added to your document. No watermark, no βfilled withβ footer, no account prompt before the download.
- Repeat work gets cheaper. Export your values once as JSON and load them into the next copy of the same form.
Who should use this tool?
Job applicants
Application packs often arrive as a fillable PDF with a covering form, a diversity questionnaire and a references sheet. Type the answers, check the required boxes are no longer red, flatten so the values cannot shift, and email one tidy file back the same day.
Patients, tenants and anyone dealing with paperwork
Intake forms, tenancy applications and school consent slips all follow the same pattern: pages of boxes, a deadline, and no printer within reach. Filter to Empty, work through what is left, and you are done in one sitting on a phone or laptop.
HR and office administrators
When the same onboarding form goes out repeatedly, fill the parts that never change, export those values as JSON, and import them into each new copy. The read-only badge also tells you at a glance which fields the template locked before it reached you.
Contractors and small businesses
Tax declarations, supplier registration forms and insurance renewals arrive as PDFs and go straight back as PDFs. Flattening before you send prevents an accidental edit downstream and keeps the values identical in whatever reader the other side happens to use.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF form filler free, and does it add anything to my file?
It is free with no signup, and nothing is stamped on the document. You get your own form back with the values in it and no branding of ours anywhere.
My PDF has no boxes to type in β why are no fields listed?
Because the document has no interactive form fields; it is just a picture of a form. The page tells you so and points you to the Edit PDF tool, where you can place text on top of the page wherever you need it.
Which field types can I actually fill?
Text fields including multi-line ones, checkboxes, radio groups, dropdowns and option lists. Signature fields and push buttons are shown so you know they exist, but they are not editable here β use Sign PDF for a signature.
What does flattening a filled form do?
It draws your answers into the page as permanent content and removes the editable layer. The result looks the same everywhere and cannot be changed by the next person who opens it, which is why most organisations prefer a flattened return.
Can I type in a PDF form on my phone?
Yes. The field list stacks above the preview on a narrow screen and your phone keyboard works as normal. Long forms are less tiring on a laptop, but nothing is missing on mobile.
Why is one of my fields greyed out?
It is marked read-only in the document itself β usually a reference number or a calculated total the issuer locked. It shows with a dashed grey outline in the preview and cannot be changed here.
Can I fill and sign a form in one go?
Fill the fields here and save the PDF, then open it in the Sign PDF tool to add a drawn or typed signature. Doing it in that order keeps the field values intact.
The form is password-protected β will it open?
Not while it is encrypted. Remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool first and then load the unlocked copy; the fields will be read normally after that.
