What is the PDF to Text tool?
Every PDF that was made from a word processor, a browser or a report generator already contains its text as characters — the problem is that those characters are stored as thousands of positioned fragments, not as sentences. This PDF to text converter online reads those fragments, works out which belong to the same line, which lines form a paragraph, and which column comes first, then gives you the result as ordinary text you can paste anywhere.
That matters the moment you try to reuse a document. Copy a paragraph straight out of a PDF viewer and you often get broken lines, hyphens in the middle of words, a page number wedged into a sentence, or the second column interleaved with the first. Getting text out of a hundred-page report by hand is worse. Here the whole file is processed in one pass, and the output box is editable, so you can fix a stray line before you save.
Extraction is honest by design: it never guesses. If a character is not in the PDF, it will not appear in your text file. Everything happens inside your browser through pdf.js, so a confidential contract or an unpublished manuscript is never uploaded, and the page keeps working with the network switched off.
How to extract text from a PDF
- Drop a PDF on the upload area, or click it to browse. The file is read immediately and every page is scanned for text.
- Pick an Extraction mode: Reading order for prose, Preserve layout to keep each line at its original horizontal position, or Raw stream to see the order the PDF itself stores things in.
- In reading-order mode, decide whether to Detect columns, Join hyphenated words and Keep original line breaks, and slide Paragraph split sensitivity if paragraphs are running together or breaking too often.
- Open Advanced options to remove repeating headers and footers, insert a page marker
such as
--- Page {n} of {total} ---, limit the job to certain pages, or switch line endings to CRLF for Windows. - Check the preview: numbered boxes show reading order, colours separate headings, paragraphs and lists, and struck-through lines are the headers being dropped.
- Edit anything you want in the Extracted text box, then press Copy text or Download .txt.
Key features
- Three extraction modes — flowing reading order, fixed layout held together with spaces, or the untouched stream order for debugging how a file was built.
- Column detection — two-column papers and newsletters come out one column at a time instead of alternating lines.
- Header and footer removal — lines that repeat near the top or bottom edge across pages are recognised and dropped, with an adjustable zone from 20 to 140 pt.
- Hyphen repair and paragraph control — words split across a line break are rejoined, and one slider decides how much extra spacing counts as a new paragraph.
- A preview that explains itself — headings, paragraphs and lists are outlined in different colours and numbered in the order they were read, so a strange result is easy to diagnose.
- Page ranges and page markers — extract only pages 1-3 and 8, and optionally label each page in the output.
- Editor-friendly output — LF or CRLF line endings and an optional UTF-8 byte order mark so accented characters survive Excel and Notepad.
- Live counts — pages used, word count, character count and how many header lines were removed, updated as you change settings.
Benefits of using this PDF text extractor
- Nothing is uploaded. Legal drafts, medical reports and internal specs are parsed in your tab, so there is no third-party copy of the document sitting in a queue.
- No page or file-size cap. A 400-page manual is fine; the limit is your own memory, not somebody's free tier.
- Faithful text, not approximations. Characters come from the file itself, so numbers, names and citations are exactly what the author typed.
- You see why the output looks the way it does. The numbered overlay makes reading-order problems obvious in seconds instead of after a careful read-through.
- Fix it before you save. The result is a normal editable text box with a copy button, so small corrections do not need a second tool.
Who should use this tool?
Writers, editors and journalists
Quoting from a report should not mean retyping it. Pull the passage out with hyphens repaired and running headers gone, paste it into your draft, and keep the wording exactly as published — useful when a misquoted figure is a correction waiting to happen.
Developers and data folk
Plain text is the input format for everything from grep to a language model. Raw stream mode also answers a question no other view does: what order does this generator actually write text in? Handy when you are writing a parser and a page renders fine but extracts badly.
Students and researchers
Academic PDFs are usually two columns with a journal name on every page. Turn on column detection, let the running heads be stripped, extract the sections you need with a page range, and you have quotable text for notes, a literature matrix or a citation check.
Admin and legal reviewers
When you need to compare two versions of a contract, search a bundle for a clause, or paste terms into an email, text beats a page image. Preserve-layout mode keeps invoices and schedules recognisable, and nothing about the file leaves the office network.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to TXT converter free?
Yes — no signup, no daily quota and no watermark in the output. The work runs on your device, so there is no server cost to recover.
Why did my PDF produce almost no text?
Because it is probably a scan: a picture of a page with no characters stored in it. The tool warns you when it sees this. Run the file through OCR first to recognise the characters, then come back here or take the text output directly from there.
What is the difference between reading order and preserve layout?
Reading order rebuilds paragraphs and reads columns one after another, which is what you want for prose. Preserve layout pads every line with spaces so it sits where it did on the page — better for receipts and schedules, and best viewed in a monospaced font. Neither produces a real spreadsheet; for that use PDF to Excel.
Can I copy text from a PDF with two columns?
Yes. Column detection is on by default: the page is split down the middle, each side is read in turn, and anything spanning both columns is treated as a heading or footer. Untick it for a single-column document with a wide table.
How do I extract text from only some pages?
Open Advanced options and type a range in Pages to extract, for example 1-3, 5, 8. Pages outside the range are greyed out in the preview so you can confirm the selection before downloading.
Can I remove the repeated header on every page?
That is on by default. A line only counts as a running header or footer if it sits within the header zone and repeats on at least half the pages, and bare page numbers are caught too. Widen the zone if a stubborn title survives.
Why do accented characters look broken in Excel or Notepad?
Those programs sometimes assume the wrong encoding. Tick UTF-8 with BOM in Advanced options and download again; the marker tells them to read the file as Unicode. Switch line endings to CRLF if Windows Notepad shows one long line.
Does it work on a password-protected PDF?
Not while the file is encrypted — it cannot be opened for reading. Strip the password with Unlock PDF and then extract text from the unlocked copy.
