What is the Watermark PDF tool?
This tool paints a mark of your choosing over the pages of a PDF — a word such as CONFIDENTIAL, a client name, a date, or a PNG of your logo. You can add watermark to PDF online free here without an account, and the marked copy downloads straight back to you as a normal PDF.
The reason to bother is usually trust. A photographer wants to show a full-resolution proof without it being used before the invoice is paid. A studio sends a layout for approval and needs it to be obvious that it is a draft, not the print file. An HR team circulates a policy internally and wants every printed copy traceable back to “internal use only”. A visible stamp does that job in a way an email footer never will, because it travels with the document.
Placement is where most watermark tools disappoint, so this one gives you the controls you would expect from a desktop app: four layouts, a nine-point position grid, free rotation, tile spacing, an opacity slider from 3% to 100%, and the choice of drawing on top of the content or behind it. All of it happens inside your browser tab, so the PDF and your logo never leave your device.
How to add a watermark to a PDF
- Drop your PDF on the upload area, or click it to browse. The page count appears under the file name.
- Pick Text or Image / logo in the “Watermark type” row. Text mode starts with CONFIDENTIAL already typed in — replace it with whatever you need.
- For text, choose Helvetica, Times or Courier, set the font size in points, pick a colour, and tick Bold, Italic or “Outline only” for a hollow stamp. For a logo, drop a PNG or JPG and set its width as a percentage of the page.
- Drag the Opacity slider until the mark is visible but the text underneath still reads — somewhere around 15-30% suits most documents.
- Choose a layout: Diagonal, Centered, Tiled for a repeating pattern, or Positioned to place a single stamp on the nine-point grid under Advanced options.
- Open Advanced options if you want a specific rotation, tile gaps, an edge margin, the “Behind content” layer, or a page range like 1-3, 5.
- Check the live preview, then press Add Watermark — the status line tells you how many stamps were applied.
Key features
- Text or image watermarks — type any line of text, or drop a transparent PNG (JPG works too) and scale it from 5% to 100% of the page width.
- Four layouts — one diagonal stamp, one centred stamp, a tiled pattern that covers the whole page, or a single stamp positioned on a 3 × 3 grid.
- Free rotation — anything from −180° to 180° in 5° steps, with sensible defaults per layout (45° for diagonal and tiled, flat for the others).
- Opacity from 3% to 100% — go faint enough to read through, or fully solid when you want the mark to dominate.
- On top or behind the content — put the stamp over the page, or slide it underneath so the original text always stays crisp and readable.
- Outline-only text — a hollow, engraved-looking stamp that stays legible over dense pages without hiding them.
- Exact live preview — the same placement function feeds the canvas preview and the exported PDF, so the preview is not an approximation.
Benefits of using this PDF watermark maker
- Unreleased work stays private. Proofs, contracts and internal policies are processed on your machine, so the file you are protecting is never handed to a third party in the process.
- Vector output, not a screenshot. Text watermarks are written as real PDF text and logos as embedded images, so the page stays sharp at any zoom and the original content is untouched.
- No stamp but yours. Nothing is added except the watermark you configured — no service branding, no trial banner.
- Nothing to install or sign up for. Open the page, drop a file, download the result; it works the same on a work laptop where you cannot install software.
- Repeatable in seconds. Because every setting is visible on one screen, stamping the next revision with the same look takes a few clicks rather than a trip through a menu tree.
Who should use this tool?
Photographers and illustrators
Send a client the full contact sheet as a PDF with a tiled, 15% grey mark of your studio name across every frame. The images stay at full resolution for judging sharpness and colour, but nobody is going to post one to social media before the licence is signed.
Design studios and agencies
Mark every round of a layout with a diagonal DRAFT or the revision number so the client — and the printer — can tell v3 from v7 at a glance. Use “Behind content” when the typography must stay perfectly legible for the approval, and set the opacity low so it does not fight your design.
HR, legal and operations teams
Stamp CONFIDENTIAL on a PDF before it goes into a data room, or mark internal copies of a handbook with the department name. Because the file is never uploaded, you can do this with employee documents without running it past IT first.
Freelancers and consultants
Watermark a proposal, a full report or a sample chapter with your name and website. A logo watermark in a page corner at 20% width doubles as quiet branding on every page someone prints.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF watermark maker free, with no signup?
Yes — there is no account, no trial and no per-file charge. The work is done by JavaScript in your own browser, so there is no server bill behind it, and the only mark on the output is the one you chose.
How do I stamp CONFIDENTIAL on a PDF?
Text mode already has CONFIDENTIAL in the text box. Keep the Diagonal layout, set the colour to red and opacity to about 20%, then press Add Watermark. Switch to Tiled if you want it repeated across the page so it cannot be cropped out of a screenshot.
Can I use my own logo as an image watermark?
Yes. Choose “Image / logo” and drop a PNG or JPG — a PNG with a transparent background looks best. The width slider sizes it as a percentage of the page width and the height follows automatically, so the logo is never stretched. SVG and WebP files are not supported; export them to PNG first.
Can I put the watermark behind the text instead of over it?
Yes — set Layer to “Behind content” under Advanced options. To do that the pages are re-embedded into a fresh document, which keeps the visible content identical but can drop interactive extras such as form fields and link annotations. If your PDF is a fillable form, stamp on top instead.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Type a range such as 1-3, 5, 8 in “Apply to pages” and the rest are left alone — the preview labels any page you scroll to as “page skipped”. Leave the box empty to mark every page.
Can someone remove the watermark from my PDF?
Be realistic: a visible watermark is a deterrent, not encryption. It is written as ordinary page content, so someone with a professional PDF editor can attempt to delete it. A tiled, semi-transparent mark that overlaps the content is much harder to strip cleanly than a single stamp in a corner.
Does the text watermark support accents or Chinese characters?
Text watermarks use the three standard PDF fonts — Helvetica, Times and Courier — which cover Western European characters. For Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or CJK text, write your wording in an image editor, export a transparent PNG and use it as an image watermark instead.
Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?
Not while it is encrypted — remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool first, then watermark the unlocked copy. If you want the finished file locked again, run it through Protect PDF afterwards.
