Leave empty for every page. Pages outside the range are copied through untouched, so they stay in colour and keep selectable text.
Converted pages are re-rendered as grayscale images, so their text stops being selectable. Keep the DPI at 150+ for print.

What is the Grayscale PDF tool?

This tool rebuilds a PDF with the colour taken out, so every page comes back as neutral grey — or as hard black and white if that is what you need. You can convert PDF to grayscale online here in a few seconds, decide exactly how the colours map to grey, and download the monochrome copy without creating an account.

The reason people look for this is nearly always the printer. Campus and library printers charge two or three times more per colour page. A mono office laser will happily accept a colourful slide deck and return a page of muddy grey blobs where the legend used to be. A repro shop asks for a “mono file” and your export is still full of RGB brand colours. Converting first means you choose how each colour becomes a shade of grey instead of leaving it to a print driver.

Under the hood, each selected page is redrawn by pdf.js at the resolution you pick, every pixel runs through the brightness, contrast and greyscale pipeline, and the finished image is embedded back into a new PDF at the original page dimensions. That is worth knowing up front: converted pages become images, so their text stops being selectable. Pages you leave out of the range are copied straight through, colour and live text intact. Everything happens in your browser tab — the file is never uploaded.

How to convert a PDF to grayscale

    1. Drop your PDF on the upload area or click to browse; the page count appears next to the file name.
    2. Pick a Conversion mode — Luminance, Average, Desaturate or Black & white. The hint line under the chips tells you what each one does to your pixels.
    3. In Black & white mode, drag the threshold slider: anything darker than that value turns black, the rest turns white. For grey modes, nudge Brightness and Contrast if a scan looks washed out.
    4. Set Output resolution (DPI) — 150 is a good default for printing — and the JPEG quality slider to balance sharpness against file size.
    5. Open Advanced options if you only want certain pages (for example 1-3, 5) or the inverted negative look.
    6. Flip the preview between Before and After, then press Convert to Grayscale and the file downloads with the size change shown.

    Key features

Benefits of using this greyscale converter

    Who should use this tool?

    Students printing on a budget

Lecture slides arrive with photo backgrounds and coloured headers, and the library printer charges per colour page. Convert the deck to grayscale at 150 DPI, drop the quality slider a little, and print the whole thing at the mono rate — with the diagrams still readable.

    Offices with mono laser printers

If the shared printer is black and white, sending it colour PDFs means every table shading and every status badge becomes an unpredictable grey. Converting first — and raising contrast a notch — makes handouts legible instead of leaving it to the driver.

    People preparing print-ready files

Zines, worksheets, order forms and thesis bodies are often quoted as mono jobs. Convert the interior pages to grey at 300 DPI, keep the colour cover out of the range so it stays untouched, and hand the printer one file that matches the quote.

Anyone cleaning up scans and faxes

A phone scan of a receipt or a faxed form usually carries a grey-yellow cast. Black & white mode with the threshold pulled down to around 150 flattens the background to white and leaves crisp text, which also makes the file much smaller than the colour original.

    Frequently asked questions

Will a grayscale PDF be smaller than the colour original?

Often, but not always. Pages heavy with colour photos usually shrink a lot at 150 DPI. A text-only PDF can actually grow, because crisp vector text is replaced by pixels — lower the DPI and the JPEG quality if size matters more than sharpness.

Does the text stay selectable after conversion?

No. Converted pages are re-rendered as grayscale images, so you can no longer select, search or copy their text. Keep the colour original as your working copy, or run the result through the OCR tool to add a searchable text layer back.

Which method should I choose to remove colour from a PDF?

Start with Luminance — it weights the channels the way your eye does. Average often keeps red chart lines brighter, Desaturate is gentler on photographs, and Black & white suits line art, signatures and faxes where you want no grey at all.

Does this really save printer ink or toner?

It helps in the obvious way: neutral grey pixels print with black ink rather than a mix of cyan, magenta and yellow, and you avoid colour-page charges. Still tick “greyscale” or “black ink only” in your print dialog, since the printer driver has the final say.

Is the output a true monochrome PDF for my print shop?

Every pixel is neutral — red, green and blue values are equal — so nothing renders in colour. But the pages are embedded as ordinary JPEG images rather than converted to a DeviceGray or 1-bit colour space. If your printer's pre-flight insists on true greyscale separation, tell them the file is neutral RGB.

Can I convert only some pages to black and white?

Yes. Type a range like 2-8, 11 under Advanced options. Those pages are converted; the others are copied into the new file exactly as they were, keeping their colour and their live text.

    What DPI should I pick?

150 DPI is fine for everyday printing and reading on screen. Use 300 for photos or small type, and stay lower for long documents so your browser does not have to hold huge canvases in memory. Very large pages are capped at 5000 pixels on the long edge.

    Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not while it is encrypted. Remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool first, then convert the unlocked copy to greyscale.
