What is the PDF to Word tool?
This is a PDF to Word converter free of accounts, uploads and watermarks. It reads the text objects stored inside your PDF, works out where paragraphs, headings, bullet lists and columns begin and end, and writes that structure into a genuine .docx file that Word, LibreOffice, Pages and Google Docs all open natively.
Be clear about what that means, because most converters are vague on purpose. A PDF describes glyphs at fixed coordinates; a Word file describes flowing paragraphs. Going from one to the other is a rebuild, not a copy. You get clean, fully editable content in the right reading order with the right emphasis β you do not get a pixel-identical clone of the original page. Simple reports, letters, articles and papers come out very close to the source. Heavily designed pages with text boxes, sidebars and tight image wrapping will need some tidying once they are open in Word.
The upside is that all of it happens in this tab. pdf.js pulls the text out and the docx library builds the document, both running as JavaScript on your own machine, so a confidential contract or an unpublished manuscript is never handed to a conversion service that keeps a copy βtemporarilyβ. Convert PDF to DOCX on an offline laptop if you like β once the page has loaded, the network is not needed.
How to convert PDF to Word online
- Drop a PDF on the upload area above, or click it to browse for the file.
- Leave the mode on Editable text β that is the one that gives you Word paragraphs you can type into. Text + page picture adds a snapshot of each page above or below the text, and Page pictures only makes a view-only document.
- Check the coloured live preview on the right: red blocks become Word headings, blue becomes body text, purple becomes list items.
- If something is misread, nudge Heading sensitivity or Paragraph split sensitivity, or untick Detect columns and Detect bullet lists.
- Decide what happens to repeated page headers and footers β remove them, move them into the real Word header and footer, or keep them as ordinary text.
- Open Advanced options if you want to set fonts, line spacing, margins, a page range or the output name, then press Download .docx.
Key features
- Real Word styles β detected titles are written as Heading 1/2/3, so the navigation pane and any table of contents you build in Word actually work.
- Structure detection you control β headings, bullet lists, columns and hyphenated line breaks each have their own switch, plus two sliders for how eagerly the text is split.
- Header and footer handling β running page furniture can be stripped out, promoted into the document header/footer, or left inline; the header zone height is adjustable.
- Outline panel β before you download, you see the exact list of headings Word will receive.
- Formatting options β keep bold and italic, serif and monospace fonts, alignment, indents and original line breaks, or override the body and serif typefaces, font scaling and line spacing yourself.
- Page setup that matches the source β reuse the PDF's page size, choose your margin, and keep a page break between PDF pages.
- Three output modes β editable text, text with page pictures at up to 300 DPI in JPEG or PNG, or picture-only pages for documents you only need to look at.
- Page ranges β convert just 1-3, 5, 8 instead of a 200-page report.
Benefits of using this PDF to DOCX converter
- Your documents stay yours. No upload means no copy on someone else's disk β the difference between a privacy policy and physics.
- Genuinely editable output. Text arrives as paragraphs, not as one giant text box or a picture of a page, so you can rewrite, translate or reuse it immediately.
- No queue, no daily cap. Nothing waits for a server slot; a long PDF is limited only by your own processor.
- Nothing stamped on the result. No trial watermark, no "converted with" footer, no email address required.
- Predictable before you commit. The preview and outline show you the conversion first, so you are not downloading a surprise.
Who should use this tool?
Students and academics
Lecture notes, journal articles and past assignments usually circulate as PDFs. Pull the text into Word to quote it properly, restructure a draft you only kept as a PDF, or rebuild a bibliography without retyping it. Turn Detect columns on for two-column papers so the sentences do not interleave.
Office and admin staff
When last quarter's report exists only as a PDF and you need this quarter's version, converting it beats starting from a blank page. Strip the running header, keep the headings, and you have a template with the wording already in place.
Translators and copywriters
CAT tools and word counters want flowing text, not fixed coordinates. A clean .docx with real paragraph breaks segments correctly, whereas copy-paste from a PDF viewer tends to arrive as a hundred stray line breaks. Ticking Join hyphenated words saves a lot of find-and-replace.
Anyone recovering their own content
Lost the original file and only have the export? This is the fastest route back to something you can edit β and because it runs locally, it works for tax documents, medical letters and legal drafts you would never post to a website.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to Word converter free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no signup, no trial counter and no paid tier, because the conversion runs on your device rather than on a server we pay for. The .docx you download has no watermark.
Will the Word file look exactly like the original PDF?
No, and no honest converter can promise that. The text, reading order, headings, lists and bold or italic emphasis are rebuilt faithfully, but a PDF's fixed layout cannot map perfectly onto Word's flowing pages, so complex designs shift. Expect editable and close, not identical.
Can I edit the PDF in Word after converting it?
That is the point of the Editable text mode: every block becomes a normal Word paragraph you can retype, restyle or delete. Avoid Page pictures only if you need to edit, since that mode embeds each page as an image.
What happens with a scanned or image-only PDF?
There is no text inside it to extract, so nothing useful comes out. The tool spots this and switches to picture mode with a warning. Run the file through OCR first to add a real text layer, then convert that version to Word.
Does it accept .doc files or produce legacy .doc output?
Neither. The input must be a PDF, and the output is always modern .docx. Word 2007 and later, LibreOffice, Google Docs, Pages and most mobile editors open .docx directly; if you truly need .doc, save it from Word afterwards.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
They are not. The PDF is read and the Word file is assembled by scripts running in your browser tab, and the download comes from your own machine. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and still convert.
Can I convert only part of a long PDF?
Yes β open Advanced options and type a range such as 1-3, 5, 8 in βPages to convertβ. Leaving it empty converts every page.
Why did my two-column PDF come out with mixed-up sentences?
Column detection reads the left column then the right one, but unusual layouts can defeat it. Try toggling Detect columns, then adjust the paragraph split slider; for pages that stay stubborn, PDF to Text gives you the raw text to reorganise by hand.
