What is the Redact PDF tool?
Redaction means removing information from a document, not hiding it behind something. This tool lets you redact PDF online free by dragging black rectangles over the parts you want gone — a salary, a home address, a client name, a bank account — and then rebuilding those pages so the hidden content is physically absent from the file you download.
That distinction matters more than most people realise. The usual shortcut is to draw a black rectangle in a PDF editor or a word processor and save. It looks convincing, and it fools nobody: the text is still live text sitting under a filled shape, so anyone can select it, copy it, or pull it out with a text extractor. Newspapers and law firms have leaked whole witness lists that way.
Here, any page carrying at least one box is rendered to a bitmap, the boxes are painted onto that bitmap, and the resulting image is placed into a new PDF at the original page size. There is no text layer left to copy — on that page there is nothing but pixels, and the pixels where your data used to be are solid black. Pages you never touched are copied through untouched, so they keep their crisp, selectable text. All of it happens in your own browser: a document you consider too sensitive to email is also too sensitive to upload, and you do not have to.
How to black out text in a PDF
- Drop the PDF on the upload area, or click it to browse. The first page opens in the editor straight away.
- Press the mouse button on the page and drag to draw a black box over the text you want removed. Draw as many boxes on a page as you need; tiny accidental drags are discarded.
- Made a mistake? Click the red × on the corner of a box to delete it and draw again.
- Move through the document with ‹ Prev and Next ›. The page counter adds “marked” so you can see at a glance which pages carry redactions.
- Press Apply redactions & download. Marked pages are flattened with the boxes burned in, and the finished PDF is saved to your device.
- Open the result and check it: try to select the redacted area, and search (Ctrl/Cmd+F) for a word you removed. Both should come up empty.
Key features
- Real removal, not a black shape — marked pages are re-rendered and the boxes are drawn into the pixels, so the covered text is not present in the output file at all.
- Draw as many boxes as you like — several redactions per page, on as many pages as the document has, all in one pass.
- Delete a box in one click — the red × on each rectangle removes it before you commit.
- Page-by-page editor — the page is rendered at a comfortable width with Prev/Next navigation, and the counter marks any page that already has redactions.
- Untouched pages stay perfect — pages without a box are copied across as they were, so their text remains searchable and selectable and their file size does not grow.
- Nothing is transmitted — pdf.js and pdf-lib do the work inside the tab; there is no upload, no queue and no copy of your document on anyone's disk.
- Plain PDF out — no watermark, no account, no per-document charge.
Benefits of using this redaction tool
- The hidden text cannot be recovered from the file. Selecting, copying and text extraction all come back empty on a flattened page, because there is no longer a text object to read.
- Confidential files never leave the building. Case bundles, HR letters and leaked documents you are verifying stay on your own machine, which is often a policy requirement, not a preference.
- Fast enough for real workloads. Mark ten pages of a contract, apply once, and the whole document is rebuilt in a single download.
- Surgical, not blunt. Only the pages you mark are flattened, so a 90-page report keeps 88 pages of good, searchable text.
- Nothing to install. Useful when you need to redact something on a borrowed laptop and cannot add software.
Who should use this tool?
Lawyers and paralegals
Privilege and disclosure work means shipping documents with names, account numbers and unrelated matters taken out. Draw boxes over the passages, apply, then verify with a text search — an audit trail you can repeat on the next bundle without sending client material to an online service.
HR and finance teams
A grievance file, a payslip or an invoice often has to be shared with one salary, one bank detail or one employee's name obscured. Redact just those pages and everything else in the file stays intact for the recipient to search.
Journalists and researchers
Publishing a source document means protecting the source. Cover signatures, phone numbers and internal email addresses, flatten those pages, and post a file that survives being pulled apart by readers with forensic tools.
Anyone sharing paperwork with private details
Sending a lease, a bank statement or a medical letter to a landlord, an accountant or an insurer usually means one or two lines nobody else needs. Black them out and send the rest with a clear conscience.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text under the black box really deleted?
Yes, on any page you mark. That page is rendered to an image, the boxes are painted into the image, and the image replaces the page — so the original text and vector content of that page, including whatever sat under the box, does not exist in the downloaded file.
What is the catch of flattening a page?
A redacted page becomes a picture. Its text is no longer selectable or searchable, the page is rendered at roughly 180 DPI so very fine print looks slightly softer, and interactive extras on that page — form fields, links, comments — are not carried over. Pages you leave unmarked are unaffected.
Can I redact a scanned document?
Yes, and it is the simplest case: a scan is already an image, so drawing boxes and flattening covers the content completely. If the scan has an OCR text layer, that layer is discarded along with the rest when the page is rebuilt.
Does redaction remove personal data hidden elsewhere in the PDF?
It removes what is on the pages you mark. It cannot know about sensitive text on pages you did not mark, or about document metadata, attachments and revision history. For a truly clean release, redact, then check the rest of the file — the PDF to Text tool shows you every string that is still extractable.
Can I undo a box before applying?
Yes. Each box has a red × in its corner that deletes it, and nothing is written to a file until you press “Apply redactions & download”. Reload the page to start over completely.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
The page opens and you can browse it, but boxes are drawn with a mouse or trackpad drag, so drawing on a touchscreen is not supported. Do the redaction on a computer — it is also easier to be accurate about what you are covering.
Can I censor a password-protected PDF?
Not while it is encrypted. Strip the password with the Unlock PDF tool first, redact the unlocked copy, then re-apply protection afterwards if the file has to go out locked.
How do I check my redaction actually worked?
Open the downloaded PDF, try to drag-select over a black box, and run a search for a word you removed. Nothing should highlight. Extracting the text of the file is an even stricter check and takes seconds.
