What is the Split PDF tool?

A PDF splitter does the opposite of a merger: it takes one document and produces the smaller documents hiding inside it. Here you load a file, say where the cuts go, and download either a single extracted PDF or a ZIP holding every part. It costs nothing to split PDF online free here, and there is no page cap, no daily quota and no signup wall.

The awkward part of splitting is usually not the cutting — it is being sure you cut in the right place. A 90-page scan of mixed paperwork has no chapter marks, and “page 12” in your viewer may not be the page you think it is. So this tool paints its decision onto the pages themselves: greyed-out pages are the ones being left behind, a dashed red edge marks a page that begins a new output file, and a badge tells you which file that page ends up in.

Everything is done by JavaScript on your machine. Pages are copied object by object rather than re-rendered, so each part comes out with the same sharp text, the same images and the same file size characteristics as the original — and the document itself never leaves the browser tab, which matters when the thing you are cutting up is a tenancy file or a set of medical results.

How to split a PDF into separate files

      1. Drop your PDF on the upload area at the top, or click it to pick a file. The page count appears under the range box.
      2. Choose a Split mode: extract pages into one PDF, one PDF per page, every N pages, at specific page numbers, or into N equal parts.
      3. Fill in the box that appears — a range like 1-3, 5, 8-10, a chunk size, the pages where a new file should start, or how many parts you want.
      4. Read the Output files list: every file that will be created is named there, with the pages it contains.
      5. Page through the preview to confirm the cut points, using the dashed red edges as your guide.
      6. Press the split button — one result downloads as a PDF, several arrive together in a ZIP.

      Key features

Benefits of using this PDF splitter

      Who should use this tool?

      Teachers and lecturers

One PDF often holds a whole term of worksheets. Split every 2 pages to hand out exercises individually, or extract just the answer key pages into a separate file you keep to yourself. The per-page mode is also the fastest way to turn a booklet into printable single sheets.

      Admin and records staff

Batch-scanned post arrives as one enormous file containing dozens of unrelated documents. Note the page where each new document begins, list those numbers in “Split at these page numbers”, and the whole stack comes back correctly separated in a single ZIP, each part named with its page range.

Anyone sharing part of a document

A landlord needs page 4 of your contract, not all 30. Extracting a page range means you send exactly what was asked for — nothing more — and it doubles as a privacy step, since the pages you leave out never make it into the new file at all.

      Freelancers and small businesses

Invoices, statements and signed pages often need filing one per client. Divide into equal parts when a report has a regular structure, and use the naming pattern to stamp the page numbers into the file names so the folder still makes sense in six months.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I extract just a few pages from a PDF?

Keep the mode on “Extract pages into one PDF” and type the pages in the range box, for example 1-3, 7. You get one new PDF containing only those pages, in the order the document had them.

Can I split a PDF into separate files in one go?

Yes. Any mode other than extraction produces multiple files, and they are zipped together automatically. Use “One PDF per page” to burst the document completely, or “Split every N pages” for even chunks.

What does “split at these page numbers” actually do?

Each number you list becomes the first page of a new file. Entering 4, 9 in a 12-page document gives you three parts: pages 1–3, 4–8 and 9–12. It is the right mode when the sections have unequal lengths.

Will splitting reduce the quality of my pages?

No. Pages are copied into the new documents as they are, so fonts stay embedded, text stays searchable and images keep their resolution. Note that each part inherits full-size resources, so parts can look larger than a simple division of the original file size would suggest.

      Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Reading the PDF, cutting it and building the ZIP all happen inside your browser using pdf-lib and JSZip. There is no server step, so nothing is stored and nothing needs deleting afterwards.

      Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not while it is encrypted — the tool will tell you to unlock it first. Run the file through the Unlock PDF tool with its password, then split the unprotected copy.

Can I control what the split files are called?

Yes, under Advanced options. The default pattern uses the original name, the part number and the page range, and you can rearrange those tokens or drop the ones you do not want.

How many pages can this PDF splitter handle?

There is no hard limit; large documents are fine on a desktop. Bursting several hundred high-resolution scanned pages into individual files is memory-hungry, so on a phone do it in a couple of passes.
