What is the PDF to ZIP tool?
Sometimes a document is more useful in pieces. A 40-page catalogue where each page is one product, a set of certificates in a single file, an exam paper you want to hand out question by question. This PDF to ZIP converter online takes one document, cuts it into one file per page, and wraps the whole numbered set in a single archive you download in one go.
You decide what each page becomes. Separate PDF copies each page into its own small PDF and keeps the text selectable. JPG image and PNG image render each page to a picture instead, at one of three scales, which is what you want when the pages are going into a slide deck, a web page or a printer that dislikes PDFs. Files come out named after the original with a zero-padded page number, so report_page_01 through report_page_40 sort correctly everywhere.
Splitting and zipping both happen in the tab. pdf-lib copies the pages, pdf.js renders the images, JSZip builds the archive, and your browser saves it. The document is not uploaded, which is the whole point when the file you are chopping up is a payroll run or a set of signed contracts.
How to split a PDF into a ZIP of pages
- Drop your PDF onto the drop area, or click it to browse. The file name and size appear underneath.
- Under Each page as, pick Separate PDF, JPG image or PNG image.
- If you chose an image format, set Image quality (scale) — Standard, High (the default) or Very high. The option is hidden for PDF output because there is nothing to rasterise.
- Press Create ZIP and watch the progress bar: it fills as pages are processed, then again while the archive is assembled.
- The download starts on its own, named after your document with a .zip extension. Open it with your operating system's built-in unzip — no extra software needed.
Key features
- Three output formats — one PDF per page, or one JPG or PNG per page, chosen with a single dropdown.
- Selectable text preserved in PDF mode — pages are copied, not re-rendered, so fonts, vectors and text stay exactly as they were.
- Three render scales for images — Standard, High or Very high, so a page can come out screen-sized or big enough to print.
- Sensible file names — yourfile_page_01, _page_02 and so on, padded to the width of the page count so alphabetical order matches page order.
- White background for JPGs — the canvas is filled before rendering, so JPG pages never come out with black edges where the page was transparent.
- Real progress reporting — per-page progress while splitting and a second pass while the ZIP is written, which matters on documents with hundreds of pages.
- One archive, one download — no forty separate download prompts and no browser blocking them halfway through.
Benefits of using this PDF to ZIP converter
- The document stays private. Splitting a confidential file into pages does not mean sending it to a server first — everything happens on your machine.
- No page cap and no queue. Long documents are limited only by your device's memory, not by a free-tier rule.
- Clean handoff to other people. A single numbered archive is far easier for the recipient than a folder of files with names like page (3) copy.pdf.
- Nothing is added to your pages. No watermark, no cover page, no branding inside the archive.
- Works with what you already have. Every desktop and mobile OS can open a ZIP without installing anything.
Who should use this tool?
People emailing lots of material at once
Mail systems get fussy about many attachments but happy about one. Split the document, send the single archive, and let the other side unpack it into a tidy numbered folder.
Teachers distributing sets
One PDF holding thirty worksheets becomes thirty files ready to upload to a learning platform, where each task usually needs its own attachment. Choose JPG at High scale if the platform previews images better than PDFs.
Admin staff archiving records
When each page of a scanned batch is a separate record — an invoice, a claim form, a certificate — one file per page is what the filing system expects. The zero-padded numbering keeps the order intact after extraction.
Designers and web editors
Need every page of a brochure as an image for a gallery or a mockup? PNG at Very high gives you crisp exports in one pass, without opening a design application.
Frequently asked questions
Does putting a PDF into a ZIP make it smaller?
Barely. PDF content is already compressed, so an archive of PDF pages is roughly the size of the pages added together — this tool bundles rather than shrinks. If you need a smaller file, use Compress PDF instead.
Can I zip multiple PDFs into one archive here?
Not on this page — it takes one document and splits it. To handle several files at once, use Batch Process, which applies an action across a folder and returns a ZIP, or Merge PDF if what you actually want is one combined document.
How are the files inside the ZIP named?
Your original name plus _page_ and the page number, padded with zeros to the width of the page count. A 120-page file gives name_page_001 upward, so sorting never scrambles the order.
Should I choose PDF, JPG or PNG for the pages?
PDF if the pages must stay searchable and printable at full quality. JPG for photographic pages and smaller files. PNG for screenshots, line art and anything with sharp edges you do not want softened by JPEG compression.
What does the image quality scale actually change?
It multiplies the page's natural size before rendering. Standard is fine for on-screen use, High is a good default, and Very high produces the largest, sharpest images — and the biggest archive.
Is there a limit on how many pages I can archive?
No fixed limit. Every page is built in memory before the ZIP is written, so a very long document at Very high scale can strain a phone. On a laptop, hundreds of pages are routine.
Will a password-protected PDF work?
Usually not — an encrypted file fails to process and you will see an error asking you to unlock it. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first, then create the archive from the unlocked copy.
Is my file uploaded to make the ZIP?
No. The pages are copied or rendered and the archive is built entirely in your browser, then handed to your normal download folder. You can go offline after the page loads and it still works.
