What is the PDF to Excel tool?
Numbers locked inside a PDF are useless until they are in a grid you can sum. This PDF to Excel converter free reads the position of every piece of text on the page, works out which items share a line and which share a column, and writes the result into a real .xlsx workbook that Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Numbers and Google Sheets all open directly.
Here is the honest part: a PDF has no idea it contains a table. There are no cells in the file, only glyphs at coordinates. The conversion reconstructs the grid from those coordinates, which means it is a best-effort rebuild rather than a perfect copy. Ordinary grid-shaped tables β bank statements, invoices, price lists, exported reports β come through cleanly and land in the right cells. Tables with merged headers, stacked multi-line cells or values that drift out of alignment will need a little tidying once they are open, and none of the borders, colours or fonts of the original come with them. What you are buying is the data, not the design.
In exchange, the whole job runs on your own machine: pdf.js pulls the text out, the SheetJS library writes the workbook, and no part of your statement or payroll report is sent to a conversion service. That matters when the PDF you need to get data out of is the sort of document you would not email to a stranger.
How to convert a PDF table to a spreadsheet
- Drop your PDF onto the upload area above, or click it to pick the file.
- Choose how the workbook is organised with Sheet per PDF page: Yes gives you a tab called Page 1, Page 2 and so on; No (one sheet) stacks everything on a single sheet called Data, with a blank row between pages.
- Set Column detection to Auto (group columns) for real tables. Pick Lines only (1 column) when the page is prose and you just want one line of text per row.
- Press Convert to Excel and watch the progress bar work through the pages.
- The .xlsx downloads under the PDF's own name. Open it and check a couple of rows against the original before you start calculating.
Key features
- Position-based column detection β text starts are clustered across the whole page, so a column stays a column even when a cell above it is empty.
- One sheet per page, or one big sheet β keep a multi-page statement split by page, or stack it all together ready for a single sort or pivot.
- Single-column fallback β Lines only mode skips the grid guessing entirely and gives one row of text per line, which is often exactly what you want for lists.
- Every page, automatically β the whole document is processed in one pass with a progress bar, not page by page.
- Real .xlsx output β a genuine workbook, not a renamed CSV, so sheet names and multiple tabs survive.
- An honest empty-page warning β if barely any text is found, the tool says so and points you at OCR instead of handing you a blank grid.
- No account, no upload, no watermark β the converted workbook is plain and unbranded.
Benefits of using this PDF to XLSX converter
- Financial data never leaves your laptop. Statements, ledgers and salary reports are parsed locally, so there is no copy of them sitting on someone else's server.
- No retyping, no typos. Even a table that needs alignment fixes is far faster to tidy than to key in by hand, and the digits are copied exactly as the PDF stored them.
- No page cap or daily quota. A 200-page report is limited only by your own memory, not by a free-tier limit that appears at page 6.
- Works when the network does not. Once this page has loaded you can convert on a plane or behind a firewall that blocks upload sites.
- Clean output you control. No watermark row, no "converted by" cell, no signup before the download.
Who should use this tool?
Accountants and bookkeepers
Bank and card statements almost always arrive as PDFs, and reconciliation needs rows. Convert with one sheet per page to keep each statement page separate, or stack everything on the Data sheet and sort the whole quarter at once. Client data stays on your machine, which keeps the process defensible.
Analysts and researchers
Published reports, tenders and government statistics love a locked-down PDF table. Getting it into a spreadsheet is the difference between quoting a figure and actually modelling it β and Lines only mode is a quick way to grab a footnote list you want to clean up with formulas.
Students working with statements and datasets
Whether it is a personal budget from your bank's PDF export or a table of results from a paper, pulling it into Excel lets you chart it instead of describing it. No licence, no install, works on a shared library computer.
Anyone auditing a long invoice
Line-item invoices and utility bills are much easier to check when you can total a column. Convert the PDF, add a SUM, and find the charge that does not belong.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to Excel converter free without a signup?
Yes. There is no account, no trial page limit and no paid plan β the conversion happens in your browser, so it costs nothing to run. The workbook you get has nothing stamped on it.
How accurate is the table detection?
It is a heuristic based on where the text sits, so grid-like tables land accurately while irregular layouts need cleanup. Merged headers, wrapped cells and columns that are only separated visually are the usual troublemakers. Always compare a few rows with the original.
Can I export to CSV instead of XLSX?
Not directly β the download is always a .xlsx workbook. Getting CSV from there is one step: open it and use Save As or Download as CSV, choosing the sheet you want.
Why are my numbers stored as text?
Cells arrive as the exact strings the PDF contained, so Excel treats them as text and may flag them with a small green triangle. Select the column and use Convert to Number, or Text to Columns, to make them calculable β this also lets you fix currency symbols and thousands separators in one go.
What about a scanned PDF with no real text?
There is nothing to extract, and the tool warns you when it finds almost no text. Run the file through OCR first to create a text layer, then convert that version β the table reconstruction works the same way afterwards.
Does it keep colours, borders and formulas?
No. A PDF contains no formulas at all, and the styling is deliberately left behind. You get values in cells, ready for your own formatting and calculations.
Can I convert only some pages, or several PDFs at once?
This page takes one PDF and converts every page of it. To narrow it down, cut the pages you need with Extract Pages first, then convert the smaller file.
Is anything uploaded while I convert?
No. The PDF is read and the workbook assembled by JavaScript in this tab, and the file is saved by your own browser. Disconnect after the page loads and it still works.
